Zometa is a brand name which contains Zoledronic acid as an active ingredient belongs to the group of medications called bisphosphonates acid. It is an inhibitor of osteoclastic bone resorption uses in the treatment of hypercalcemia, a condition with a high level of calcium in the blood occurs in patient with some types of cancer.   

How Zoledronic acid works?

The action of zoledronic acid is to inhibit bone resorption. Zoledronic acid reduces osteoclastic activity and induces osteoclast apoptosis. Zoledronic acid also blocks the osteoclastic resorption of mineralized bone and cartilage through its binding to the bone. Zoledronic acid inhibits the increased skeletal calcium and osteoclastic activity release induced by different stimulatory factors released by tumors.

Why this medication given?

Zoledronic acid is used in the treatment of hypercalcemia, multiple myeloma cancer (tumors that are formed by cells of the bone marrow) or certain type of bone metastases (spread of caner to the bone). It is also used in the treatment of Paget's disorder of bones in both men and women along with osteoporosis in men and in women who have gone through menopause. This drug also reduces the risk of having more factures in those patients who have has a recent hip fracture.

Do not use this medication if you are under any of these following conditions:


  • If you are allergic to Zoledronic acid or any of its ingredient.
  • If you have severe kidney disorder or low level of calcium in blood.
  • History of thyroid, malabsorption syndrome or parathyroid surgery.
  • If you are taking diuretic or using other bisphosphonates such as ibandronate, pamidronate, alendronate and etidronate.
  • If you are pregnancy as this medication can harm unborn baby. 
  • History of Surgical intestine.

Which drug can cause drug interaction with Zometa?

Some medications should not be taken along with this medication as they can harm your kidney, medication such as   antiviral, chemotherapy,  medicine for bowel disorders, injected antibiotics,  medicine to prevent organ transplant rejection, injectable osteoporosis medication and pain or arthritis medicines  that including Advil,  aspirin, Tylenol and Aleve).

Prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products can also interact with this drug.

How to store this drug?

 Store this medication at 20 to 30 °C. Keep away from excess heat and moisture. Keep away from the reach of children.

 How to take Zometa?

 Zometa is injected into the vein of a patient through an IV. Your healthcare provider will give you this injection. It is important to d rink at least 2 glasses of water within a few hours before you get the injection to keep from getting dehydrated.

Take more amounts of calcium and vitamin D supplement while you are being treated with Zometa. Confirm from your doctor about the type and strength of calcium to taken. You may require frequent medical tests to determine how long you should be treated with Zometa.

In case of miss dose, contact your doctor if you missed any dose of Zometa injection.

In case of over dose, you need urgent checkup. Talk your doctor or call emergency room, if you are not able to breathe or walk properly.

Adverse side effects after taking this drug:

Constipation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, heartburn, weight loss, mouth sores, agitation, fever, hair loss, itching, upper chest pain, irregular heartbeat, muscle spasm, swollen gums, loosing of teeth and stomach pain

You must follow some safety precautions after taking this medication:

  •  Avoid having any type of dental surgery while you are treated with this medication as it may take longer time for you to recover. 

  •  Breast feeding women should not take this drug as it can passes into your milk and harm unborn baby. 

  •  Confirm with your doctor if you are taking any other prescription, non-prescription, vitamin or any herbal supplements.
